SHARK TOOTH HUNTING AMELIA ISLAND, FL

Shark tooth hunting is a fun hobby that can be enjoyed all around the state of FL.  I happen to live near Amelia Island and spend a lot of time searching for fossils there.  Fossils found on Amelia Island range in age from 20 million years old to 10,000 years old, which really fascinates me!  This blog post may contain affiliate links.

My favorite spot to hunt is from Main Beach Park to Fort Clinch.

My favorite time to hunt is a couple hours before high tide.  I use this tide chart.  My biggest tips for searching for teeth is:

1.  Do not wear sunglasses
2.  Search in shell beds
3.  Pick up every black triangle and examine it
4.  I like to search near the waters edge so it's constantly washing up and/or out new shells and teeth

There are some items I like to make sure I have on hand when shark tooth hunting.  I call these the shark tooth hunters starter pack.
Do Not Forget Your Sunscreen!

I love this waterfly fanny pack.  It's water resistant and has many pockets to hold car keys, cell phone, snacks and teeth.  Some people use water bottles, plastic bags or pill bottles to hold their teeth, that requires too much action from your hands for my liking.  Fanny packs are the way to go in my opinion!  Purchase one here!

These JACKSHIBO water shoes are my absolute favorite for on the beach.  They are comfortable and lightweight.  They are a must while shark tooth hunting since you are walking over shell beds.  Purchase them here!

I love my sand dipper Jr.  I enjoy looking for teeth on the waters edge as it's washing up new teeth and this helps me grab teeth as they float by.  It also makes it easy to bring items up to eye level to check out instead of bending over each time you think you might see a tooth.  Purchase one here!

It can be very bright at the beach but wearing sunglasses will distort the color and shine from the teeth.  It is best to not wear sunglasses but instead opt for a hat.  I love this style.  Purchase one here!

I always make sure to wear SPF chapstick year round at the beach because my lips always seem to burn!  Purchase here!

I like to pack a snack in my fanny pack.  Sometimes I'll make a bacon, egg and cheese burrito but most of the time I will pack these granola bars.  They always hit the spot when I'm out in the sun on the beach.  Purchase here!

If it's winter time I also like to pack waterproof gloves, tissues and gum.

Now that you have your location and shark tooth starter pack, lets check out some of the fossils that you can find on Amelia Island!
