succulent propagation

Ways to propagate succulents:  leaf propagation, stem propagation, water propagation and beheading and/or separating offsets.

leaf propagation: when leaves fall off a succulent (or you pick them off) set them on top of soil and leave them alone.  I've heard some people dip the ends in ground cinnamon which works as a rooting hormone.  Once the leaves sprout roots start watering or misting daily to promote fast strong root growth.  The roots will naturally grow down into the soil and you'll see a plant start to emerge on the end of the leaf.  Do not stick the leaves in the soil, lay them flat on top.

stem propagation: when you behead a succulent, continue watering the stem and it will produce babies.

water propagation: fill a container or water bottle with water about an inch below the leaves.  use saran wrap over the container and poke holes in saran to poke leaves through.  or poke holes up sides of water water to stick leaves through.  I've heard the condensation helps the leaves root faster however I've tried this method and have not had much success.

beheading: cut the succulent off the stem, leaning about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of stem on the head.  Allow to dry for a day or two and then plant.  This method is commonly used when your succulent hasn't received proper light and has stretched.  You can start over by planting the head and propagating the leaves left on the stem plus get stem babies.

separating offsets: if your succulent is sprouting babies in between it's leaves or on it's stem once they are a good size you may cut off similar to the beheading instructions.

I've posted photos of my projects below and sectioned them off with lines to make it easier to follow along in their progress.

Mar 3, 2020 roots have started to emerge from leaves and 2 babies appeared on the stem!

Beheaded these two succulents on February 11, 2020.  Allow the heads to sit out so the cut can dry and callous over to prevent rot/infection.  Once dry you can plant in soil and water normally.
Lay leaves on soil, they can sit out until roots start to grow with no attention.  Once roots sprout you will need to keep the soil moist daily to give them a good head start.
Continue watering the stem as usual and it will grow babies off of it!

March 12, 2020  lots of root growth!

February 25, 2020 picked leaves off of a few different varieties and placed on pete moss in a foil tray.  This tray is being kept indoors in a window

March 22, 2020  some of the leaves look like they are absorbing water and becoming soggy.  Not really seeing much root growth at all.
March 12, 2020 attempted water propagating.

On March 3, 2020 I removed all of the babies from the nursery pot and put them on pete moss in a foil tray and left it outside.  I wanted to see how they would do.

January 3, 2020  I've been throwing leaves that fell off my succulents into this pot of dirt and watering weekly.  They are doing very well.
