CHULETAS - FRIED FRENCH TOAST

I stumbled across this fascinating story online about how some Jewish families would make these faux pork chops made out of bread so that their Catholic neighbors wouldn't suspect their faith.  We decided to try out a similar recipe for an April fools dinner and they were a hit!

loaf Italian bread
3/4 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg
oil for deep frying
blueberry syrup

Slice bread into 1" thick slices.  Slice a few of the slices into multiple sticks to poke into sliced bread.  Use a knife to poke a cross shape into the bottom of each slice and carefully slide a bread stick into each one.
Beat flour, baking powder and soda, salt, buttermilk and egg together until well combined and dredge each "pork chop" in batter on both sides.  Deep fry in oil until batter puffs up and turns golden brown on both sides.  Take out and put on paper towels to drain.  Drizzle "pork chops" with syrup before serving.
